Thank you, Cincinnati! Thank you, Amberley Village! Thank you, Cheviot! Thank you, Golf Manor! Thank you, Silverton! And thanks to residents in the portions of the municipalities of Fairfax and Wyoming and the townships of Anderson, Columbia, Delhi, Green, Springfield and Sycamore that make up the 91 square miles of Cincinnati Public Schools.
Thanks to voters in these communities, Issue 1 – a crucial renewal levy for CPS – was approved on Election Day by one of the largest margins of support ever: 70.34 percent for, compared to 29.66 against, according to final unofficial results.
Voter support of this magnitude does not come without confidence that our schools and district are on the right track, which is a tribute to the dedication and hard work of our staff. While we all know that our work to ensure excellence for all students is challenging and far from complete, Tuesday’s outcome is a vote of confidence for the collective efforts of CPS employees to support student success.
Ultimately, our students are the biggest winners. With this renewal, CPS is able to provide fiscal stability by continuing to receive the $65.2 million annually that this levy generates for our General Fund, representing about 15 percent of our total operating budget. That means we will be able to continue provide a full complement of academic programs and support services to our 33,000 students.
Of course, we will continue to need to watch our bottom line and make wise fiscal decisions, because Issue 1 does not increase revenue to our district; it merely sustains the funding we already received from this levy.
Still, voter approval of monetary issues is never automatic, and approval margins as overwhelmingly large as this one are rare. I am extremely proud of this accomplishment and what it says about support for our district.
Special thanks is owed to the Issue 1 campaign leadership and volunteers, who made personal financial donations and contributed personal time to putting this vital levy over the top with such resounding success.
Again, congratulations to all on a great Election Day outcome!
