Rothenberg, Westwood Students Pitch Business Ideas for “Shark Tank”-Style Competition

The first few days of February have been circled on sixth-grade classroom calendars at Rothenberg Preparatory Academy and Westwood School since the start of the school year. Those days meant showtime.

Students have spent all school year working in small groups to brainstorm potential business ideas, explore costs and product development techniques, and ultimately hone their presentation skills to pitch their ideas for a chance to launch the business with their classmates.

Students pitched their ideas in Tangeman University Center on the University of Cincinnati’s campus for fellow students, teachers and the “Sharks” (panel of judges) to consider, ask questions and, ultimately, evaluate. Rothenberg students had the floor on Thursday, February 1, and Westwood students had the floor on Friday, February 2.

“Our Vision 2020 focus on Student Enterprise has been transformative for our students,” said Rothenberg Principal Amber Simpson. “They’ve been taking what they learn in the classroom and using their imaginations to create something new. Each of them talked about donating profits either to charities or other organizations in the community.”

After review and deliberation from the panel of “Sharks,” the winning teams were revealed to the students: Rothenberg’s “The Candle Men” and Westwood’s “Bedazzled.”

“It was evident how much hard work was put into these presentations, especially with the guidance of their teachers,” said Chadwick Meade, “Shark” and volunteer with the UC Economics Center through his employer, Western & Southern Financial Group. “We are coming together as a community for the next generation of business leaders.”
