The convention attracted more than 6,000 students from 150 schools around the country. WHHS entered two teams in the Quiz Bowl, in which the competing schools answer questions in a variety of topics, such as current events and pop culture, journalism terminology and Associated Press style, scholastic media law, civics and American government, and more. A team winning first place was the first in school history.

“I am really happy with how things turned out — I was surprised by the result but nevertheless very proud of the effort everyone put forth,” said Nick Robertson, senior at WHHS who attended the convention.

Students also participated in write-off competitions, in which they produce different works of journalism on a given topic. Some students designed infographics, while others wrote an article on demand or provide photo caption copy. Entries could be recognized as “Superior,” “Excellent” or “Honorable Mention.” Across the 16 categories WHHS entered, students won nine awards:

  • Broadcast Commentary: Honorable Mention, Conrad Kleiner
  • Graphic Design: Excellent, Delaney Owens
  • Yearbook Layout Theme: Excellent, Grace Sublett
  • Yearbook Copy/Captions Clubs: Excellent, Allyson Standley
  • Yearbook Copy/Captions Academics: Excellent, Navia Palmer
  • Press Law & Ethics: Superior, Matthew Youkilis
  • Review Writing: Honorable Mention, Ibrahim Munir
  • Sports Writing: Honorable Mention, Bobby Keegan
  • Feature Writing: Excellent, Grace Berding

The students are already looking forward to defending their national title in the Quiz Bowl for the 2019 convention in Washington, D.C.
